The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) urges growing businesses to review GST turnover and reporting methods, with compliance changes ahead and some entities transitioning to updated requirements from 1 July 2026.
Businesses, including international companies, exceeding key GST turnover thresholds are being reminded to review their reporting and accounting methods to ensure compliance with current requirements. Entities with GST turnover of $10 million or more must adopt full Business Activity Statement (BAS) reporting and shift from a cash to a non-cash (accruals) accounting basis. Those reaching $20 million or more are required to report GST monthly rather than quarterly.
The ATO has identified cases where businesses have not updated their methods after surpassing these thresholds. As a result, some will be transitioned to the correct reporting frameworks from 1 July 2026, with notifications to be issued to affected businesses or their tax representatives.
Businesses may also voluntarily update their GST reporting settings through online services without waiting for formal notification.
Under full BAS reporting, all GST labels must be completed rather than reporting only summary totals. The move to accrual accounting requires GST to be reported when invoices are issued, while input tax credits can be claimed upon receipt of a valid tax invoice.
For those shifting to monthly reporting, associated obligations such as wine equalisation tax, luxury car tax, and fuel tax credits will also move to a monthly cycle. Timely lodgement and full payment remain essential under the revised schedule.
